Brio Cables

All of the cables have had their day so I’ve decided to replace them.  There are six main cables plus a couple of other control cables which are used with the little taps below the seat – I’ll deal with these with the offcuts as they’re pretty tiny.

I’ve measure each cable, inner and out with digital calibers as well as length and nipple shape/size. I’ll do my best to order the right thing now!

The measurements I made were the following:

Clutch Cable
Outer Length – 164cm
Outer Diameter – 5.73mm
Inner Length – 173cm
Inner Diameter – 1.76mm
Nipple Type – Barrel
Nipple Width – 8.02mm
Nipple Diameter – 7.96mm

Throttle Cable
Outer Length – 166cm
Outer Diameter – 5.37mm
Inner Length – 176cm
Inner Diameter – 1.18mm
Nipple Type – Tube
Nipple Width – 3.95mm
Nipple Diameter – 2.69mm

Gear Cables x2
Outer Length – 171cm
Outer Diameter – 5.21mm
Inner Length – 187cm
Inner Diameter – 1.48mm
Nipple Type – Barrel
Nipple Width – 5.86mm
Nipple Diameter – 6.25mm

Brake Cable (Rear)
Outer Length – 75cm
Outer Diameter – 6.8mm
Inner Length – 94cm
Inner Diameter – 2.35mm
Nipple Type – Tube (bloated)
Nipple Width – 7.45mm
Nipple Diameter – 6.72mm

Brake Cable (Front)
Outer Length – 111cm
Outer Diameter – 5.09mm
Inner Length – 125cm
Inner Diameter – 1.79mm
Nipple Type – Barrel
Nipple Width – 8.13mm
Nipple Diameter – 7.94mm

As you’ll see, there are very few similarities between cables which would make me think that they have been replaced with non-standard one over the years.  I’m going to attempt to standardise to a degree, especially brakes, but we’ll see what I can actually achieve.

So with brakes & clutch I’m going with 2mm cable with 6mm outer and with throttle and gear selectors I’m going with 1.5mm cable with 5mm outer.  I’ve bought some 6mm and 8mm barrel nipples too plus one specific inner cable with a pre-pressed tube nipple for the throttle.  Fingers crossed!!
